Job title: Intake Clerk

Salary range is $45,000-$55,000, depending on experience. The position is office-based in the downtown Akron office.  Hours are full-time. SLD offers paid vacation, sick time, 401(k), and health insurance.  This is an at-will, salaried position. Hours will be Monday – Friday, 6:00am – 2pm, times can vary depending on court schedule, with a one-hour lunch.

Responsibilities

  • Creates all forms for the intake interviews of Summit Legal Defender clients appearing in-person in court or incarcerated in Summit County Jail.

  • Interviews clients to obtain information necessary to open cases, maintain contact, and make bond arguments.

  • Works with legal interns to complete jail intake interviews at the Summit County Jail Monday- Friday.

  • Appears in court to assist Summit Legal Defenders attorneys and legal interns with arraignments and initial appearances in Akron, Barberton, and/or Stow Municipal Courts.

  • Communicates regularly with Support Staff, legal interns, Training Director, and Intern Program Manager.

  • Responsible for making sure all information is accurate and complete based on the information provided.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of court and case management systems including but not limited to, TYLER, OPD Online, public access record searches and/or other similar case management software.

  • Maintains a positive relationship with jail and court staff.

  • Sends daily email to the Summit County Jail regarding afternoon jail visits.

  • May help with routine filing of legal documents as directed by attorneys, legal interns, and support staff.

  • Performs other similar and related duties or duties as may be designated by the Training Director or Director.

  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Collegiate level coursework in social sciences, criminology, criminal justice, etc. preferred but not required.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and others, both inside and outside the Summit Legal Defenders organization.

  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and remote meeting software platforms. 

  • Must have a reliable personal vehicle and valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information relative to clients and other associates.
